Celebratory Displays along with a Cheer for Life: Israeli Citizens Rejoice at Deal to Return Hostages
The declaration regarding a deal expected to result in the release captives detained within Gaza for more than 24 months has caused delight and relief across Israel.
A group which has campaigned for the release of Israeli captives in Gaza voiced “profound gratitude” for what it called a “landmark achievement”.
The agreement—which still must be approved by the Israeli war cabinet—involves the return of 20 hostages alive as well as the remains of 28 deceased captives in return for 250 Palestinian detainees imprisoned for life in Israeli jails plus 1,700 individuals from Gaza.
To date, 148 captives have come back—largely through earlier truce agreements—51 bodies have been retrieved while eight hostages were freed by rescue.
Jubilant Scenes in Hostages’ Square
Jubilant scenes have unfolded at Hostages Square located in Tel Aviv with crowds of individuals assembled ahead of the deal being signed.
The gathering started applauding and moving to music beneath US and Israeli flags—a female attendee holding up a placard that read: “We adore Trump.”
“This is a wondrous day,” she expressed.
Another, 50-year-old Yael, cried as she watched the people celebrating.
“I am thrilled—it is such a comfort,” she stated. “We need to see their return home to their families.”

Relatives Rejoice with Fireworks
The mom and sibling of Israeli hostage Matan Zangauker lit fireworks in celebration of the announcement that he would be returned home.
“They’re coming back!... Matan is on his way home!” Einav Zangauker exclaimed while holding her child.
Viki Cohen, the parent of captive Israeli Nimrod Cohen, shared online: “My child, you are coming home.”
The joy could be felt in the streets of Tel Aviv after the news.
Released Captives Say Prayers and Raise Glasses
Ex-captive of British-Israeli origin Emily Damari celebrated with another freed hostage Romi Gonen, uttering blessings of gratitude, then cheering “To life”, which means “for life”. She has been campaigning for the freedom of her companions, twins Gali and Ziv Berman.
Their sibling Liran Berman posted: “My dear Gali and Ziv, I adore you. You are coming back.”
The cousin of Gil Dickman Carmel Gat was captured in October 2023, and her body recovered from a tunnel in Gaza almost a year later. He has been joining other hostage families in pushing for a deal that brings the homecoming of all those still being held in Gaza.
“I can’t quite believe this is actually happening. We have waited for such a long time and here it is,” he expressed.
He stated he felt “shattered” that Carmel will not be among those coming back to their homes but was “radiant with happiness” for the families of the captives who are at last coming back.
Eitan Horn was seized from Nir Oz kibbutz in Israel’s south together with his sibling.
Cautious Optimism from Family Members
Dalia Cusnir, whose relative by marriage Eitan Horn remains captive in Gaza, remarked she felt like she was living “in a dream”.
“We’re more than grateful to President Trump and everything he has done on our behalf. We feel like it might be the beginning of the end of this ordeal, and embracing Eitan seems nearer than ever,” she said.
However, she warned that it was still too soon to celebrate.
“Until the last hostage is here, we’re not opening the bubbly. We’re going to keep fighting... until it’s over,” she said.
“Numerous events might occur until the last moment so this is why we are extremely cautious. We simply wish to thank everyone who was involved in the efforts and ensure this agreement is done... We shall rejoice only once the last captive is back home.”
Eitan was taken from Nir Oz kibbutz in Israel’s south together with his sibling Iair, who was freed from captivity through a truce agreement earlier in the year.
