Toy Story 5 Trailer Pits Woody and Buzz Against a Digital Device
It has been 30 years since the original Toy Story film was released, launching the animation giant as a major film company and bringing audiences to iconic characters like the cowboy doll (the actor) and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), who are now household names.
Coming in 2026, the next chapter is scheduled for release. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 landed recently, providing a brief look into the plot but keeping fans wondering how it will address the ending of Toy Story 4.
Bonnie's New Toy: A Digital Device Frightens the Toys
The preview shows Bonnie — who inherited the toy collection when he grew up — receiving a brand new toy, one that terrifies Woody, Buzz, and the crew. She acquires her initial digital gadget, and she is thrilled about it.
Presumably, the frog-shaped tablet will come to life just like the rest of her playthings. However, the characters seem to view it as a danger intending to supplant them, which it likely will.
Woody's Return: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4
One thing the teaser avoids is why the sheriff is back with his companions in the child's bedroom. The finale of Toy Story 4 saw him set off on a fresh journey with the shepherdess (Annie Potts), journeying with a fair and assisting prize toys find good homes.
Surely, the filmmakers will address the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Witnessing him show up in Bonnie's room unexpectedly is a little strange, however. It also makes us wonder whether his partner will have returned with him. And where is the stuntman toy (Keanu Reeves)?
Continuity from the Last Installment
Fortunately, some aspects are continuing from the prior film. The last thing the cowboy did before setting off for his new life was pass his symbol of authority to the cowgirl (Joan Cusack), entrusting her as the leader of the toy domain. The clip shows the insignia attached to her shirt.
It is hoped she is still the driving force among the group.
Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on the scheduled date.
